Teaching from Paintings with Religious Subject Matter
Experiences at the Pinacoteca di Brera
Dr. Ilaria Beretta, Education Department, Pinacoteca Brera, Milan
The collection of the Pinacoteca took form in the first half of the 19th century, drawing significantly from the holdings of suppressed churches and monasteries. As a result, the works on display are not only primarily religious in origin, but also specifically Christian in their subject. Making these works – and their religious subject matter – accessible to a broad and diverse public is a daily part of our work at the museum and in the Education Department.
Our participation in the Forum on Museums and Religion is an opportunity to reflect on our practical experience in this area and a chance to take stock of our approach – one which seeks to be universally inclusive and to provide our visitors with a complete understanding of the works of art in our collection.
