Sharing the sacred with schools

Teaching RE in the British Museum

Dr. Nicholas Badcott, Education Manager, Learning and National Partnerships, British Museum, London

The British Museum in London has numerous displays of objects associated with religious belief and practice. Many visiting schools book our talks and workshops relating to ancient Egyptian and Greek religions, but relatively few teachers identify the museum as a place in which to learn about world faiths. For those who do, the Schools Team have created opportunities in both core programming and temporary exhibitions to support the learning of young people at primary and secondary school level.

This paper will discuss the nature of recent provision at the museum, including the popular Hajj exhibition programme, and the challenges faced in development and delivery.
